The
Board of Dental Examiners regulates dental advertising through
of the Rules & Regulations. Advertising includes letterhead,
envelopes, newspaper ads, television ads, radio ads, checks,
and so on. Failure to follow the Rules now in place can result
in a disciplinary hearing and possible suspension, revocation,
or probation of your license and/or fines.
The Board recently amended Articles V,
VI, and VII. Other Rules affecting advertising are in Article
VI. Before you order
any advertising, please consult the Rules & Regulations
and review this checklist to help avoid problems:
- Is your name, earned degree, and type of licensure
included? Are they all together? If you indicate membership
in organizations,
are the full names of the groups written out? Letters after
your earned dental degree are often misleading to the public.
- Do you mention any services you are willing to provide?
If so, you must be sure that the services are listed
apart from your name. Your type of licensure must immediately
follow
your name and degree.
- Do you list cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry, restorative
dentistry, or aesthetic dentistry? These are services
and must be listed apart from your name.
- Do you use a fictitious name which has Board approval?
If you reference your practice with a name other than your
own,
that is a fictitious name and needs to be approved by
the Board before you can use it. Contact the Board office
or download
the application form.
- Do you make a statement about results which you can achieve
or a warranty or guarantee? If so, you could be in violation
of the Rules.
- If you mention that a service costs
a specific amount, but you know that there are some cases
where it would cost more,
be sure to state exactly what is included in your offer
and when there would be an additional charge.
